Songwriting Class



Professional composer Paul Johnson Rogers teaches students the basics of songwriting. This class is Intended for aspiring songwriters, we will review, develop and utilize some fundamental songwriting skills and techniques. (Please note: This course focuses on the art of songwriting, rather than music production and technology, which are subjects covered in a separate course/syllabus.)

Pre-requisites
There are no prerequisites for this course; however, some basic music knowledge or instrumental experience would be advantageous.

Course Overview
Through active listening and critical analysis, we will explore and practice a variety of approaches to songwriting, while developing an appreciation and understanding of form, melody, harmony, rhythm, arrangements, lyrics and rhyme.

Course Objectives
At the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:
? An understanding of song form and prosody
? An ability to develop melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and lyrical themes

Course Materials/Supplies
None required, but students might wish to bring note taking materials. Some handouts will be provided.

Instructor: Paul Johnson Rogers
Instructor Bio: Paul Johnson Rogers learned his trade working in some of England?s leading recording studios and he now provides music composition and production services for broadcast, stage and film. His music can be heard on adverts, trailers and Hollywood films, as well as on many award-winning tv programs. Paul?s work has also been used by music industry icons such as Iron Maiden (Death on the Road World Tour), Roger Waters (The Wall - Live in Berlin) and many others.
